Summer Reading 2017

Kilmer Middle School students are encouraged to read as much as they can during the summer. Specific grade level requirements are as follows:
Rising 7th & Rising 8th Grade Requirements for English
All Kilmer MS students are required to read TWO books this summer:
  • Kilmer's One Book * One School * One Community 2017 selection

We expect that all students will have completed their summer reading upon arrival at Kilmer on the first day of the 2017-18 school year: August 28, 2017.

Why is it important to read in the summer?
"Reading is most effective when parents or family members can provide reading guidance and make sure that kids understand what they’re reading. Reading can be both a solitary activity and a social activity that fosters learning and recreation." -Research in Brief: How to Make Summer Reading Effective, 2016

Research continues to indicate that extended learning breaks contribute to diminishing literacy skills such as fluency, vocabulary acquisition, and reading comprehension." -School Library Journal, June 2012

The Search Institute lists "reading for pleasure" on its list of 40 Developmental Assets for Adolescents to help them "grow up healthy, caring, and responsible."
